 Sports Interactive, as each year so far, announced the continuation of its major franchise, Football Manager 2011. At the best time of the year, during rains and insidiously threatening storms, the new FM leaves us no choice but to spend the cold days in a warm home putting the perfect team together this year with many new improvements.
The first thing we notice when we start the game and make a new manager, is the possibility of linking the game with your Twitter or YouTube account, so you can directly publish your progress through the game, or record videos and upload them directly to YouTube. This is a very nice surprise and a good innovation. When the league starts, among a whole bunch of options and unknown commands, if you're not a hardcore FM gamer, the first thing you’ll see will be your new and improved inbox. The news and messages are now combined into one coherent whole, where you’ll be receiving news about your team and staff, as well as world events, transfers, etc. Which information will go through this inbox is entirely up to you, as the last years’ Subscription system has been kept completely. Generally, the main part of the interface is reconstructed, it is now very clear and intuitively revised, which is very good and very useful for new players. The messages are color encoded, so the orientation in the inbox is now easier.
It's a real pleasure to watch the match in the new 3D engine!The biggest improvement of this year's edition of FM is definitely the 3D engine. Progressed from retrograde to quite pleasing graphics and very nice modeled players, stadiums and rich texture. The animations are very realistic and the players on the field express their emotions much more vividly now. They are more cheerful and imaginative rather than just running to the corner flag. Player mistakes during the game are followed by defenders grasping for his head and falling on the grass in disbelief. The same can be said for the audience, cheering is no more a monotonous fatigue, but the intensity is like going on and off depends of course of the success or failure of their teams. Controls during the match are now much easier during the very match and in addition to standard instructions, there are shortcuts for quick substitution, changing roles in the field and stuff like that, which is definitely faster and easier than pausing and going to a tactical view. The only drawback is that the faster commands can only work one at a time, for example, it is not possible to make two changes at once or replace the player and change his position.The new improvements have caught the biggest pain in the... knee :) developers Sports Interactive have had up till now - Training. The training system is essentially the same except it is now regular for the players to continue what they did in last two to three years on trainings. There are predefined training regimens for different positions and coaches are meaningfully deployed in the areas of training. As far as individual training, beside new positions, you can choose an area for each player to focus on during the training. Shots and passes or mobility and speed, there are many choices so that any deficiency of your players would be able to quickly make up for effective training and players improvement. New integral part of the training is now a match preparation. This is a new element of training where the players are preparing for the upcoming match. You can choose up to 3 different formations that you plan to use during the game, as to which aspect of the game players will focus (for team play, offensive play, defensive positioning, and so on). Each unknown style of play will be unknown in the first few games also to the players who will need plenty of training and play through to get in shape for a certain style of the game. In my opinion, this is the most important and most significant innovation in FM2011 because now the players really respond to tactical changes, and it will certainly eventually reflect in their game.
The overall impression is definitely positive. Although we have not even made it beyond the second season, we have an impression that the new FM 2011 does not suffer from the monotony that previously games were known to follow after few seasons. The interface looks modern, the 3D matches are vivid and interesting to watch. New features bring even more variety in an already freely gameplay. Although it is not just the replica of the real football, FM 2011 draws you into a world where you can be the next Alex Ferguson, if you're a hardcore fan of the franchise and you run a club for 24 seasons. All in all, the game has a lot to offer the old players, but also enough of that to attract new players.
